Blacksky will help India to create the first private constellation of land surveillance satellites

American company Blacksky, which specializes in satellite images and geo -analytics, joined the project to create the first private constellation of Earth observation satellites in India. The initiative is led by the European aerospace company Thales Alenia Space on behalf of Nibe Ltd., Indian company, which is actively developing in the field of defense and aerospace industry.

Key details of the deal

Project participants:

  • Thales Alenia Space: production of the first high-resolution optical satellite.
  • BlackSky: supply of satellite images, analytical services, as well as the development of a high-resolution satellite.
  • Nibe Ltd.: the Indian defense giant, which implements the project through its subsidiary NIBE Space.

Goal: creation of an independent monitoring system to meet India's national security and defense needs.

Functionality of satellites:

  • Close to real time observations.
  • Ability to update data multiple times daily with high accuracy.
  • Detection of changes and potential threats with the help of artificial intelligence.

The role of BlackSky in the project

  • High resolution satellite delivery.
  • Provision of analytical services using geospatial data.
  • Support for the launch and orbital maintenance of satellites.
  • Providing advice and expertise for India to build its own satellite monitoring system.

BlackSky has already demonstrated its experience in similar projects, in particular in cooperation with Thales Alenia Space in 2022 year to create a satellite surveillance system in Indonesia.

The purpose of the project for India

Nibe Ltd., which has a strong position in the security sector, aims to become the premier provider of satellite intelligence to the Indian government and military. Through NIBE Space, the company plans to build an independent space infrastructure, which will allow India to develop its own Earth observation capabilities and reduce dependence on external data providers.

Trends in the field of satellite technologies

This project reflects the growing interest of countries in commercial space companies not only for obtaining satellite images, but also to create own satellite systems. This hybrid approach allows countries to gain instant surveillance capabilities, while building long-term national space assets.
