Chinese scientists from Tsinghua University created the AI model "PhyE2E", which allows finding new regularities in large sets of space data. They have already tested it on the data of astrophysical observations and are convinced, that the model is able to derive new formulas. Scientists said, that it is able to literally create new scientific knowledge.
The PhyE2E computer system combines a neural network with a variety of mathematical programs and databases. It goes through data sets and looks for certain mathematical patterns in them.
In general, PhyE2E can, using different mathematical methods, analyze any arrays of physical data. However, the developers decided to test it specifically in the field of astrophysics, where a huge number of observations have been accumulated. As a result, the system was able to independently build five formulas based on this data, very similar to those, which were previously created by humans.
Essentially, a new model of artificial intelligence, developed by this research group, learns to break complex physical problems into simpler parts. Based on existing and well-established equations, the model can generate new formulas, which effectively describe the relationship between different variables.
PhyE2E may soon be used to analyze other experimental and astrophysical data, which will help to find new formulas, which better describe specific physical phenomena or interactions. It can also be adapted and applied to other disciplines in the future, potentially contributing to scientific discoveries in various fields.
