23 April 2025 the Hubble Space Telescope, a joint project of NASA and ESA, notes 35 years in Earth's orbit. New images have been released to mark the occasion, covering objects from Mars to distant galaxies.
A revolution in astronomy.
Launched in 1990 year, Hubble became the first telescope, located outside the Earth's atmosphere, which made it possible to obtain high-resolution images, inaccessible to terrestrial observatories. Unfiltered by the Earth's atmosphere, its broad wavelength coverage extends from ultraviolet to near infrared, opening new horizons in the study of space.
Impressive achievements
- Over 1,7 million observations approx 55 000 astronomical objects.
- More 22 000 scientific publications and 1,3 million citations.
- The data archive is more than 400 terabytes.
Hubble made a significant contribution to the discovery of dark energy, observation of exoplanets and study of distant galaxies
New images for the anniversary
New pictures have been published for the 35th anniversary of the telescope:
- Mars: image, made of 28 by 30 December 2024 year, show thin water clouds and the northern polar cap during the Martian spring.
- NGC Planetary Nebula 2899: bipolar structure of gas flows, glowing with hydrogen and oxygen.
- The Rosette Nebula: a region of active star formation with dark hydrogen clouds, illuminated by young stars.
- NGC spiral galaxy 5335: galaxy with a bar, which promotes the formation of new stars in the central part.
Legacy and future.
Hubble remains one of the most important instruments in astronomy, continuing to work together with new telescopes, such as James Webb. His contribution to the science and popularization of astronomy is invaluable.
