Airbus company, Leonardo and Thales signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the goal of merging its space divisions into a new joint venture.
The initiative is designed to strengthen Europe's strategic autonomy in space, consolidating efforts in the areas of satellite production, space systems and provision of related services. The new enterprise will be aimed at supporting critical infrastructure and national programs in the telecommunications industry, navigation, remote sensing of the Earth, science, research and security.
After completion of all necessary approvals, the company can start work in 2027 year. It will combine approx 25 thousands of workers across Europe, will have an annual income of approx 6,5 billion euros (according to the results 2024 year, pro forma) and a backlog of orders for more than three years ahead.
Contributions of the parties
- Airbus will bring its Space Systems and Space Digital divisions from the Airbus Defense and Space business.
- Leonardo will add its space division, as well as shares in joint ventures Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space.
- Thales will contribute its stake in Thales Alenia Space, Telespazio and Thales SESO.
After the transaction is completed, the ownership structure of the new company will look like this: Airbus – 35%, Leonardo – 32,5%, Thales – 32,5%. Management will be carried out jointly, on the basis of balanced corporate control.

The heads of the three companies are Guillaume Faury (Airbus), Roberto Cingolani (Leonardo) also Patrice Ken (Thales) - emphasized, that this project is a turning point for the European space industry. It reflects a shared vision of creating a stronger and more competitive European player in the dynamic global space sector. Pooling of resources, talent and experience will accelerate innovation, ensure growth and create added value for customers, partners and employees.
