Artemis 2 flew around the moon

6 April 2026 year, four astronauts from the USA and Canada became human, which moved away from Earth at the greatest distance in history, when they flew around the moon as part of the Artemis mission 2. The Orion spacecraft, codenamed Integrity, broke the record for the longest distance, on which people moved away from the Earth, established by the Apollo mission 13 56 years ago - 400 171 kilometer.

Astronauts observed the moon with the help of cameras and the naked eye. They were in regular contact with the scientists at the Flight Control Center, conveying his impressions of the color, brightness and other features of the lunar terrain, and also took pictures for further return to Earth. Cameri, mounted on Orion solar panels, provided live images during approach, albeit at a lower resolution. These descriptions continued, until Orion passed behind the Moon from Earth's point of view, which caused a planned loss of signal with the ship at approx 40 minutes. When Orion appeared again, the crew took a break from observing the moon, and then watched the solar eclipse, when the Moon blocked the Sun from the ship's perspective for about an hour. During this, it was possible to record impacts of small meteoroids on the surface of the Moon.

Although the flyby of the moon was driven by orbital mechanics after execution 2 in April, the launch maneuver on the trajectory to the Moon, as well as a small corrective maneuver at the end 5 April, the operation of the spacecraft and astronauts during the event went smoothly.
