AstroForge is preparing the DeepSpace-2 mission to capture an asteroid

AstroForge is actively preparing for its next ambitious mission called Vestri (formerly known as DeepSpace-2), which is to be the first ever private landing attempt on an object outside the Earth-Moon system.

Key details of the Vestri mission:

Goal: Make a soft landing on a metallic asteroid (probably, same 2022 OB5) to analyze its composition directly on the surface.

Technological ship: The new device will weigh approx 200 Kg (almost twice as much as the previous Odin) and will be equipped with an electric motor and landing gear.

Launch: Planned in 2026 year (approximately in the first half of the year) as an additional payload to Intuitive Machines' IM-3 lunar mission.

This decision was made after that, as the company's first deep space mission — the Odin probe (neglected 26 February 2025 year), - sorry, encountered critical communication problems shortly after entering the asteroid's trajectory. Despite the loss of contact, AstroForge used this experience to refine the Vestri architecture, in particular, power and communication systems.

Importantly: Unlike NASA missions, which cost hundreds of millions, AstroForge aims to build Vestri for less 10 millions of dollars, proving the viability of commercial space mining.
