Boeing has opened a new production line at its El Segundo plant (California) for mass production of electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensors. These devices are critical for tracking missile launches from space.
Key details of the extension:
Goal: Expediting deliveries for the US Space Force program – Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking (MWT).
Production capacities: A new workshop with an area of over 830 m² (9000 kv. feet) will allow Boeing to double the output of satellites. IN 2026 year, the company plans to supply 26 spacecraft, which is twice as much as the indicators 2025 year.
Technologies: Sensors are able to detect thermal signatures of ballistic and hypersonic missile launches in seconds and provide high resolution to accompany them.
The main customer: The satellites are being developed by a subsidiary of Millennium Space Systems, which has a contract for the supply of the former 12 devices for medium Earth orbit (MEO) to 2027 year.
The expansion is part of the Pentagon's strategy to build a resilient multi-layered network of satellites to defend against emerging missile threats. More official information can be found on the Boeing website.
