British company SatVu, which specializes in thermal infrared imaging, concluded a contract with the European Space Agency (THIS) in the amount of 3 millions of euros. For three years the company will provide high -precision thermal satellite data for the COPERNICUS CONTRIBUTING MISSION (CCM).
This is the first contract of the first category within Copernicus, which the company received from Great Britain. Thanks to this, SatVu will become a key provider of thermal data for such thematic areas, such as monitoring heat waves in cities, infrastructure control, emissions assessment, water resources management and response to climate emergencies.
SatVu thermal images provide a detailed picture of surface temperature changes with a resolution of up to 3,5 meters. This is especially valuable for surveillance in hard-to-reach or dangerous regions. Among the applications:
Urban planning – assessment of heat load to improve energy efficiency;
Environmental monitoring – detection of thermal anomalies in rivers and coastal waters;
Defense and security – control of sensitive objects in difficult weather conditions;
Emergency situations - quick detection of fires, floods and industrial incidents.
According to SatVu CEO Anthony Baker, the granting of such a contract to Great Britain indicates the growing role of regional thermal technologies in ensuring Europe's climate and national security.
Simonetta Cheli, director of Earth observation programs at ESA, confirmed, that the integration of new European companies into Copernicus is a key step to maintain the leadership of the program in the field of satellite monitoring.
