According to the five-year contract, the Borealis system will be developed for the National Space Operations Center, which manages Britain's space surveillance and defense capabilities. This will be a unique system of national production, which will support military operations around the world. It will work together with other programs, such as ISTARI (UK Space Command's program to launch satellites into orbit and provide intelligence and surveillance capabilities), to improve UK space awareness, the ability to exercise freedom of action in space and ensure space operations.
The system will provide an understanding of the space environment, including space weather, in particular space debris and active satellites.
CGI is a leading provider of IT services to international defense customers, in particular Great Britain, Australia, Canada and the USA. CGI will work together with a network of partner organizations, selected according to their experience, to implement the program.
