European Space Agency (THIS) highlighted 2,7 million euros to the German private company Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) to prepare and support the first two launches of its RFA One commercial micro launch vehicle. The funding was provided under the ESA Boost programme!, aimed at stimulating the development of private European commercial space services.
Key funding and mission details:
Targeted allocation of funds: The grant will cover payload integration and launch for the first two flights. The first launch involves putting the satellites into a sun-synchronous orbit, and the second - to a low Earth orbit (LEO).
Overcoming the crisis: This contract is a powerful financial and reputational boost for the company thereafter, as in August 2024 In 2018, the first stage of the RFA One rocket was destroyed during fire tests at the SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland.
Improvement of infrastructure: In addition to preparing the launches themselves, part of the funding will be directed to the improvement of ground systems, in particular, the development and optimization of the RFA Orbit analytical tool for accurate mission planning and flexible management of customer satellites.
European strategy: RFA support is part of a wider initiative by ESA and the German Space Agency (DLR) regarding the creation of a competitive European microlauncher market, where RFA competes with other startups, such as Isar Aerospace and HyImpulse.
