The French company Dassault Aviation announced support from the Ministry of the Armed Forces of France and the European Space Agency (THIS) development of the new VORTEX orbital spaceplane (Véhicule Orbital Réutilisable de Transport et d’Exploration – reusable orbital transport and research vehicle).
The presentation of the project took place at the Paris Air Show. The VORTEX spacecraft will be used to deliver cargo to orbit and back, as well as to perform various orbital service tasks. In addition to civilian missions, the project may also receive military application.
VORTEX development will be phased:
The first stage is the VORTEX-D demonstrator (scale 1:3).
Then VORTEX-S will come out (scale 2:3) – "intelligent autonomous device".
The full-size version of the VORTEX-C will be the first full-fledged device, capable of delivering cargo to low Earth orbit.
Piloted VORTEX-M modification is also planned.
