Ukrainian defense technology company Himera and Danish satellite manufacturer GomSpace have started operating the experimental communication satellite Obria Nano. Apparatus, neglected 1 October 2026 year aboard SpaceX Transporter-18, undergoing orbital testing. The companies are planning to create a group to ensure communication on the territory of Ukraine.
The project is one of the European initiatives, aimed at increasing Ukraine's control over satellite communications. This is especially relevant after the restrictions on Starlink and Starshield services, which affected military operations, in particular, for the control of unmanned systems.
According to the co-founder and general director of Himera M. Rudominskyi, the project aims to lay the foundation of an independent communication network for Ukraine. In the future, the companies plan to establish the production of satellites and ground terminals within the country.
Chimera, founded in 2022 year, develops protected tactical radio systems, able to work in electronic warfare conditions. GomSpace specializes in the production of small satellites, payloads and spacecraft subsystems.
Technical characteristics of Obria Nano, the amount of funding and the planned number of satellites of the group are not disclosed. National communication systems will not be able to completely replace the global Starlink network, however, they are able to provide dedicated channels for specific military missions and supplement commercial services.
