Indian space boom: over 200 startups in five years thanks to government policy and innovation

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, that currently operates in the country over 200 startups, which specialize exclusively in space technologies and services. This is an impressive increase compared to less than 50 by such companies five years ago.

Context and importance

  • Development of the domestic market
    As of 2020 year, only a few dozen space startups worked in India. Thanks to deregulation and strategic support from the state, their number exceeded 200. Companies cover the fields of small satellites, satellite data, agrocosm, telecommunications and commercial launches.
  • State support
    Through the creation of the Indian Center for the Advancement and Authorization of Space Technologies (IN-SPACe) startups receive funding and access to state infrastructure. IN 2025 a target fund was launched in over 5 billions of rupees to support innovation initiatives.
  • Commercialization of space
    India is positioning itself as a competitive country in the market for small satellites and commercial missions. Successful examples are Pixxel startups, Skyroot Aerospace, Dhruva Space, Bellatrix Aerospace. Some of them are already conducting their own launches or producing satellite components.
  • International cooperation
    India's space projects are reaching the global level. Indian companies participate in joint programs with NASA, ESA and private players, as well as in dual purpose projects within defense cooperation with other states.

Why is it important for Ukraine?

India demonstrates, how a country with limited resources and import dependence can create a dynamic private space sector in a matter of years. For Ukraine, which has a powerful scientific and technical potential, India's experience can serve as a source of practical ideas: deregulation, support of startups, Attracting private capital and public-private partnership is the key to a new space strategy.
