India has announced a major overhaul of its space program, by transferring the production and commercial maintenance of launch vehicles to the private sector. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will no longer spend energy on the serial construction of missiles. Instead, the government agency will focus entirely on deep space exploration, scientific discoveries and creation of advanced technologies.
This decision is part of India's new Space Policy (Indian Space Policy), which aims to turn the country into a global space market for commercial launches.
To transfer business technology, the government created a state-owned company, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), which acts as a bridge between scientists and private factories:
Small rocket SSLV: The technology of creating a new rocket for small satellites (SSLV) has already been completely transferred to a consortium of private companies.
LVM3 heavy rocket: Production of the largest Indian rocket (which took the apparatus to the moon and will build the BAS station) also moves to commercial consortia involving large companies, such as HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and L&T (Larsen & Toubro).
Private startups: Such companies, Like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos, now they are developing independently, build and launch their own light rockets from Indian spaceports.
Freed from the routine factory work of building hulls and engines, India's best scientists will channel all resources into challenging scientific missions:
BAS Station and the Moon: Development of modules for its own space station Bharatiya Antariksha Station and preparation for the landing of Indian astronauts on the moon by 2040 year.
Mission to Venus (Thank you): Creation and launch of a scientific probe to study the dense atmosphere and surface of Venus.
Study of the Sun: Continuation of research with the Aditya-L1 space observatory.
New technologies: Development of reusable spacecraft (RLV-LEX project) and nuclear engines for long flights.
This model copies the successful experience of the USA, where NASA orders the delivery of cargo and astronauts from private companies like SpaceX, namely, engaged in science and deep space research.
