«SDA TRANCHE 1 Transport Layer С» – this is a launch within the program Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (Pwsa), regarding the creation of a stable network of US military satellites in low Earth orbit, developed and managed by the US Space Agency (Space Development Agency). This is the first major Defense Department program to use small, low-cost satellites for global military communications and data relay. Among the satellite developers: Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman та York Space Systems.
Each spacecraft is equipped with an intersatellite laser communication system, and transmitters in the Ka range, which will provide data transmission directly to military aircraft, ships and ground stations. Together, the satellites form an orbital network, which rapidly distributes data across hundreds of nodes, which will allow information to be transmitted for operational distribution.
This launch will expand the CA grouping «Tranche 1 Transport Layer» will on 21 KA. At the moment, the group consists of 21 KA. It is planned, that the KA group «Tranche 1 Transport Layer» will consist of 126 satellites.
