Canadian Space Agency (CSA) highlighted 1 million Canadian dollars to the Canadian Space Mining Corporation (CSMC) for the development of a compact nuclear reactor, able to ensure energy independence on the Moon. Funding was provided within the framework of the Space Technology Development Program and will allow moving to the next phase of the Low Enriched Uranium Nuclear Reactor project (LEUNR).
LEUNR is created as a universal energy source for extreme conditions — from lunar bases and scientific missions to resource extraction systems. The reactor is also seen as a promising solution for remote regions of Canada, in particular arctic and northern communities, which today rely on diesel generators.
Funding paves the way for detailed construction, mission scenarios, prototyping and safety analysis. In the future, the company plans to demonstrate a fully fueled reactor in Canada with further deployment in space together with CSA and international partners.
