The Canadian Space Agency canceled the contract to build satellites with Spire

Canadian Space Agency (CSA) canceled the contract, signed last year with Spire Global to build a fleet of small satellites called WildFireSat, intended for forest fire monitoring. As of 29 April 2026 year, the reason for the termination of the contract was not announced.

CSA selected Spire for the WildFireSat project in February 2025 year, having entered into a contract of value 52,7 million USD for construction 10 cubits, equipped with infrared sensors of the German company OroraTech. It was planned, that nine of these 8U cubesats will be launched in the 2029 year to a sun-synchronous orbit of the "dusk-dawn" type, to fill gaps in wildfire monitoring data from current satellite observations. The tenth satellite was supposed to serve as a spare ground satellite. Spire stated, that will build satellites in Canada, expanding its Canadian office to do so.

CSA reported, that plans to continue the program in partnership with other government agencies — Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) та Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
