China deploys Fengyun-4C geostationary weather satellite to track severe thunderstorms over Nepal and provide real-time data for search and rescue operations after glacier collapse on China-Nepal border.
Satellite, launched in December 2025 year, is at a height 36 000 km. It is equipped with a Lightning Mapping Imager device (500 personnel/s, processing 30 GBIT/with), which captures lightning. The data is combined with cloud images, information about convection, precipitation estimates and measurements of the Fengyun-3G satellite. This allows you to determine the strengthening of the thunderstorm, speed of its movement and risks of floods, landslides or strong wind, and also promptly warn rescuers and the population.
The National Satellite Meteorological Center of China has established a special early warning channel for Nepal with prompt transmission of lightning images and data. Fengyun-4C is the latest satellite of the second generation of the Chinese system. Its capabilities exceed the characteristics of the previous Fengyun-4B by 2-3 times. Together, they provide fast scanning, hyperspectral sensing and 24-hour lightning monitoring in the region.
According to the South China Morning Post, catastrophe 26 took her life at least in August 1280 persons, over 5500 are considered missing.
