Indra Group writes off damaged SpainSat NG 2

16 January 2026 year company Indra Group (majority owner of satellite operator Hisdesat) announced the conclusions of the engineers, according to which it is established, that the SpainSat NG satellite 2 will not be able to fulfill the task of providing communications services for the Spanish Ministry of Defense and allied governments.

The company announced two weeks ago, What a satellite, launched in October 2025 year, suffered a "cosmic particle impact" during the transition from supersynchronous transition orbit to final geostationary orbit. According to information from Indra, despite the millimeter size and weight of only a few grams of the cosmic particle, that collided with the satellite, the high velocity impact to his critical area caused irreparable damage, which will interfere with the execution of the planned mission.

The company previously noted, that the blow happened, when the device was at an altitude close to 50 000 kilometers - much higher than the geostationary arc. This makes damage by orbital debris unlikely, so satellite, probably, struck by a micrometeoroid. Key satellite systems typically have some degree of protection against impacts from micrometeoroids and orbital debris. It is not known whether the damaged area was deprived of such protection, whether the blow was stronger, a knife designed for shielding. As of today, the satellite remains intact, with no reports of debris being tracked nearby.

Indra has already started the process of ordering a replacement - the SpainSat NG satellite 3 and expects, that its cost will be covered by the insurance company.
