The American developer York Space Systems has officially presented the new LX/V-CLASS satellite platform, created specifically for long-term missions in very low Earth orbit (VLEO – Very Low Earth Orbit), at heights from 200 to 300 kilometers. This step opens up new opportunities for highly detailed Earth observation and ultra-fast transmission of military data.
Technical features of the LX/V-CLASS platform:
Aerodynamic design: The main challenge for VLEO orbits is the friction of the thin atmosphere. So that the satellites do not lose speed and do not fall, the body shape was streamlined, reducing the frontal drag as much as possible.
Braking compensation: The devices were equipped with plasma engines with high thrust based on the Hall effect from the subsidiary company Orbion Space Technology. They will constantly adjust the orbit of the satellite, ensuring its service life over 3 years.
Protection against atomic oxygen: At a height 200 km construction materials are quickly destroyed due to an aggressive environment. The new platform received special durable coatings to protect optics and electronics.
Power and load: The satellite is capable of carrying up to 250–300 kg of payload (example, потужні телескопи чи радари SAR) та генерувати до 1.5–2 кВт пікової потужності.
Because of their proximity to the surface, optical cameras and IR sensors can produce much higher resolution images using much smaller and cheaper lenses.
