The US space force plans to create a network of next-generation reconnaissance satellites in geostationary orbit (GEO) in mesh-network format for continuous monitoring of orbital activity and operational data transmission to military operators. Constellation codenamed SG-XX, which is part of the wider Andromeda program, will be placed in a "string of pearls" configuration (several satellites line up in the same orbit at the same distance from each other)
Mesh architecture will allow satellites to bypass delays, associated with ground stations, and form shortened "sensor-weapon" cycles.
The Space Force is moving away from the practice of creating unique military structures by the forces of a single contractor and implementing a strategy of prioritizing the use of commercial solutions. Leading industrial companies will take part in competitions for the performance of tasks during the next decade, including Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, and dynamic space startups. Implementation of the program is closely coordinated with other distributed network initiatives, in particular, the Space Data Network of the Space Systems Command, with the aim of forming sustainable architecture, capable of countering growing orbital threats from potential adversaries.
