The US space forces are implementing a strategy for the development of artificial intelligence

The US Department of Defense has identified artificial intelligence as one of the key areas of development, and the Space Forces are actively integrating these technologies into their operations. The main goal is to make AI tools an integral part of the daily work of military units, which is especially important for the structure, which constantly works with large volumes of data.

The strategic plan "Data and AI FY 2025" was published, which defines the steps towards the systematic use of data and artificial intelligence. The plan envisages an annual update and the active participation of industrial partners, which will help in the development and implementation of solutions.

One of the key directions became "AI Challenges" — competitions in the format of hackathons, during which participants create prototypes to solve real problems. The first generative AI competition took place last year and collected more than 350 participants. A new stage of the competition, which started this summer, already attracted more attention than 200 teams.

To coordinate projects in the field of data and AI, each of the three main commands of the Space Forces — Space Training and Readiness Command, Space Operations Command and Space Systems Command — created special councils. This allows to coordinate work and provide practical effect for military personnel at all levels.

At the same time, there remains the problem of outdated ground-based satellite control systems, which were developed decades ago. Their automation is seen as a way to reduce the burden on operators and increase work efficiency. An additional challenge is information overload: the volume of data is constantly growing, and for effective actions, the military needs tools, that allow you to quickly select the most important.

The strategy of the Space Forces is consistent with the broader policy of the Ministry of Defense, which bets on the "AI first" approach. In July, contracts were concluded with Anthropic companies, Google, OpenAI and xAI, each with a volume of up to 200 million dollars. Their goal is the implementation of modern commercial developments of artificial intelligence in the field of national security, in particular in logistics, simulations and big data analysis.
