IonQ, known primarily as a world leader in the field of quantum computing, received an important defense contract from the US National Space Agency (NRO). The task will be carried out by its space division, a subsidiary of Capella Space.
The agreement was concluded as part of the government's Radar Commercial Augmentation program (RCA), which is aimed at attracting the capabilities of the commercial sector to strengthen the American intelligence satellite group.
According to the terms of the agreement, IonQ will deliver high-resolution radar images and related analytical geospatial data to the Pentagon and intelligence agencies via Capella satellites.
SAR technology: The satellites involved use synthetic aperture radars (Synthetic Aperture Radar). Unlike optical cameras, SAR radars are capable of monitoring the Earth around the clock in any weather conditions, easily penetrating through dense clouds, fog, smoke or total darkness.
Fields of application: The received intelligence will be used for operational assessment of the tactical situation, planning national security missions and making strategic defense decisions based on accurate digital models.
This contract demonstrates IonQ's massive transformation. By integrating the aerospace company Capella into its structure, the giant of the quantum industry is building a multidisciplinary platform for US national security needs:
Data processing using AI and quantum: Vast arrays of SAR radar images are ideal fuel for artificial intelligence systems, which IonQ plans to accelerate with its next-generation quantum computers (such as IonQ Tempo).
Secure connection (QKD): In the future, the Capella satellite network should become a physical base for the deployment of a global quantum key distribution infrastructure (QKD) — technologies for creating completely secure military communication channels, which cannot be hacked or intercepted.
The deal with NRO coincided with another big success for IonQ in the national security sector — the company also won a contract for 28 million dollars from the DARPA agency for the mass production of unique small-sized optical atomic clock Evergreen-05 for high-precision positioning of military equipment.
