Musk is teaming up Explainable Artificial Intelligence with SpaceX in an effort to build space-based data centers

3 February 2026 Elon Musk officially announced the merger of SpaceX and Explainable Artificial Intelligence. This strategic alliance aims to create the world's first large-scale orbital data centers.

Key aspects of the agreement:

Goal: Deployment of a satellite network for AI computing. Musk claims, that the energy needs of artificial intelligence cannot be met on Earth without harming the environment, therefore, space is the only way to scale with solar energy.

Scale: SpaceX plans to launch up to a million satellites, which will work as cloud servers. The combined company is valued at 1,25 trillion dollars. This makes it the most valuable private company in history.

Structure: Explainable Artificial Intelligence, which already owns the X social network, now becoming part of the SpaceX ecosystem. This aggregates the data (X), computational models (xAI), transport (Starship) and the Internet (Starlink) into a single mechanism. According to Musk's forecasts, already in 2-3 years, AI calculations in space will become cheaper than terrestrial counterparts.
