MDA Space continues development of Canadarm3 despite changes in NASA's plans for Gateway

The management of MDA Space stated, which continues to be actively working on the Canadarm3 robotic arm, despite NASA's March announcement of the de facto cancellation of the Gateway project in favor of a lunar base focus. Canadarm3 is Canada's contribution to Gateway, to which Europe also joined, Japan, United Arab Emirates and NASA.

For reference: MDA Space is a leading Canadian aerospace and technology company headquartered in Brampton, Ontario. It is a key global developer of satellite systems, geointelligence and advanced space robotics, such as Canadarm robotic manipulators,
used on the ISS.

NASA Gateway is the planned International Space Station, which was supposed to orbit the moon. The project was created as part of the Artemis program as a transfer point for flights of astronauts to the lunar surface, however, later the space agency decided to change the architecture in favor of building a full-fledged base directly on the surface of the satellite.

IN 2024 year, MDA Space received a contract worth 730 million US dollars to design and build Canadarm3 — a robotic arm, which should support external operations on the Gateway. CEO of the company, Mike Greenley, said, that as of today, the company continues discussions with the Canadian Space Agency regarding the redesign of the Canadarm3 robotic systems, які будуть потрібні для підтримки нового етапу дослідження Місяця. According to him, команда проєкту виконує роботи згідно з планом щодо фінальних конструкцій Canadarm3, а також розглядається можливість переорієнтації роботизованої руки на місячну поверхню.
