Sentinel-4 device, which will monitor air quality over Europe, will be installed on board the MTG-Sounder satellite (MTG-S). The main device of which is the MTG-S infrared probe. It is one of three MTG satellites, that will provide improved data for weather forecasting and storm detection.
This will be the first time, when Europa will have an infrared probe in geostationary orbit, therefore, this innovative mission will bring real benefits to weather forecasting and understanding the composition of the atmosphere. Together with MTG satellite images, ESA scientists will be able to get a complete picture of the weather, data on rapidly developing storms, formation of clouds and lightning. The launch of the satellite from Cape Canaveral should take place in July.
Now the ESA is one step closer to providing the data, which will improve air quality monitoring and weather forecasting for Europe and North Africa.
