Germany will buy 40 military satellites worth €3 billion

The German army plans to buy 40 satellites in low Earth orbit from the joint venture of Rheinmetall AG and Iceye Oy under a contract worth about €3 billion, which is currently awaiting final approval.

As reported by the German publication Handelsblatt, CEO of Rheinmetall Armin Papperger noted, that the agreement provides for the supply of all satellites to the Bundeswehr within two years.

The new constellation of satellites will operate in low Earth orbit (LEO) and will provide high quality synthesized aperture radar images (SAR), strengthening Germany's intelligence and analytical capabilities.

in addition, German Aerospace Center (DLR) develops satellites, capable of jamming other spacecraft and inspecting objects in orbit, which will expand the country's potential in space security.

The initiative is part of a massive €35 billion investment plan, aimed at the development of defense space systems of Germany to 2030 year.
