Germany and France create joint early warning system JEWEL

Germany and France have agreed to launch a joint JEWEL initiative, which should strengthen protection against missile threats. The corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the German-French Council on Security and Defense.

The system will consist of two components:

  • space segment on the basis of the project ODIN’S EYE, which involves the use of satellites with infrared sensors to detect rockets launch;
  • Network of ground radars, which will combine existing and promising technologies.

ODIN'S EYE is coordinated by the German satellite manufacturer OHB, and funding comes from the European Defense Fund (EDF). In parallel with the memorandum on the creation of JEWEL, it is planned to sign agreements on ODIN'S EYE and its initial operational readiness.

The missile early warning system is considered a key element of defense, and for France, also as a means of guaranteeing the possibility of nuclear deterrence. It is emphasized in the joint conclusions, that French nuclear forces significantly strengthen NATO security.

in addition, Berlin and Paris are launching a new strategic dialogue at the highest level to further integrate defense policies.

Separately, the parties discussed the disputed joint programs — the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) та Main Ground Combat System (MGCS). Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, that key decisions regarding their development should be made by the end of the year.
