New POLSA satellite products in forestry

On the platform of the National Satellite Information System (NSIS) two new products are available in the forestry category: monitoring of forest areas and the structure and biodiversity of forest plantations.

The Polish Space Agency has released new nationwide satellite products, which allow actual and objective monitoring of forests and wooded areas. Based on satellite images, received under the Copernicus program, these products allow, among other things, accurately determine tree cover, structure of the forest, dominant species and type of plantation.

Monitoring of forested areas supports spatial planning, nature protection and assessment of changes in the environment. It allows managing urban and rural green areas and adapting to climate change. The data can also be used to analyze water retention and the effects of extreme events, such as droughts, fires and storms.

The result of forest monitoring is a satellite product for the inventory and analysis of the structure of stands and biodiversity based on remote sensing data. This product provides information on dominant tree species, biodiversity and the degree of forest fragmentation, which allows for a deeper assessment of the state of forest ecosystems.

Products are widely available and free on the NSIS platform. They can be used by local self-government bodies, state administration, environmental services, state forests, national and landscape parks, scientific institutions and commercial structures.

POLSA's new forestry products provide reliable, a consistent and repeatable source of spatial information, that facilitates decision-making based on current and objective data and supports sustainable local environmental management, regional and national levels. These products can be found in the forest map.

For those, who is interested in a more detailed analysis of the surrounding space, a new edition of POLSA's flagship satellite product, the Land Cover Map, is also available on the NSIS portal (MT), which suggests division into 10 класів, including two classes of forests: deciduous forests and coniferous forests, which allows for an in-depth analysis of the structure of the earth's surface.

The campaign is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Institution, responsible for investment implementation, is the Ministry of Development and Technologies.
