The Open Cosmos company is actively promoting the concept “Open Constellation” - a global joint network of sovereign satellites. Their vision is that, to give countries and organizations access to high-quality satellite imagery without having to build the entire infrastructure themselves.
Key aspects of the Open Cosmos strategy:
Sovereignty through sharing: countries (example, Great Britain, Greece or Portugal) launch their own satellites, but integrate them into a single network. This allows each party to own their own device, but receive data from all other satellites of the constellation.
DataCosmos platform: Open Cosmos uses a cloud-based platform for real-time image processing. This allows users to not just receive “raw” photo, and immediately see analytics: tracking climate change, detection of illegal deforestation or monitoring of maritime borders.
Communication and speed: The company's vision includes fast data transfer between satellites and ground stations, which allows you to obtain images of critical areas within a matter of hours, not days.
Although Open Cosmos targets the civilian and government sectors, their approach completely coincides with the new strategy of the US Space Force:
Standardization: Using commercial platforms for rapid deployment.
Flexibility: Ability to quickly add new satellites to the existing network.
Availability of data: Transition from complex proprietary communication channels to clear cloud services.
Their companions (example, based on the Aleph platform) are designed to be as light and efficient as possible, making them ideal candidates for future installation of compact MPDT motors for precise positioning and extended on-orbit life.
