2 November 2025 South Korea launched its fifth military intelligence satellite into orbit as part of the Project 425 program, completing a multi-year effort to create an independent space surveillance network. The network is able to film the territory of North Korea around the clock, in particular, detect nuclear and missile activity.
South Korea's Ministry of National Defense said, that the system would allow the military to detect and track potential provocations from North Korea at intervals
at two o'clock, serving as a key component of Seoul's “Kill Chain” pre-emptive strike system. This will allow detection of imminent starts, intercept missiles, that are approaching and strike back quickly.
Satellite #5, equipped with SAR, provides a resolution of approx 30 centimeters per pixel, which allows accurate observation of missile launch sites, movement of troops and other strategic objects in North Korea under any weather conditions.
Together with Project 425, Seoul plans to expand its intelligence capabilities, by launching an additional 50–60 small and microsatellites to 2030 year. The Ministry of Defense said, that these efforts are part of a broader program to advance self-sufficient national defense and space operational capabilities.
