Portugal became the 60th member of the Artemis Agreement

11 January 2026 year in. Lisbon Portugal signed the Artemis Agreement and became the 60th country, that joined this initiative.

The Artemis Accords are a series of bilateral agreements between the US government and other countries, based on the Outer Space Treaty 1967 year. They define the basic principles of cooperation, which should be observed in outer space and on various bodies of the solar system. The agreements cover a wide range of issues - from the exchange of scientific data to the use of space resources and coordination of activities.

Eight states became the first signatories of the Artemis Agreement - the event took place 13 October 2020 year. Since then, their number has been constantly increasing. Now they include the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, India, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Armenia, as well as almost all European countries, including Ukraine.

China is also trying to gather its own space allies to counter the US.
This activity is carried out within the framework of the Agreement on participation in the construction project of the International Lunar Research Station. So far, Chinese successes are more modest, because today all have joined the agreement 13 countries. Except for China itself, this is russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Egypt, Nicaragua, Serbia, Pakistan, STEAM, Thailand, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and Senegal.
