18 June 2026 Quantum Space announced the conclusion of the contract
with the US Department of Defense to develop an orbital refueler based on its Ranger platform. The device is designed to transfer fuel to satellites in geostationary orbit.
For reference: Quantum Space is an American aerospace company, specializing in the creation of space logistics infrastructure, orbital stations and satellite maintenance. Its main product is the range of universal space vehicles Ranger, intended for refueling
and extending the life of satellites in orbit.
Financing is provided through the Operational Fund for the Improvement of Energy Opportunities (OECIF). The company plans to hand over the device to the US Space Force until 2028 year. The refueler will be compatible with military client satellites. Quantum Space CEO Jim Bridenstine called the contract an important step in creating an orbital logistics infrastructure to support long-term military operations.
Quantum Space participates in the US Space Force's multibillion-dollar Andromeda program. As part of the program, the company offers the Ranger device for monitoring the space domain and plans to use its design as a client device for a demonstration refueling mission in geostationary orbit. The Ranger platform is designed for a payload of 500 kg to several metric tons of fuel and is equipped with a multi-mode propulsion system (chemical + electric traction on one type of fuel). The Quantum refueler will have two standard refueling interfaces — Orbit Fab and Northrop Grumman, which will ensure compatibility with a wide range of military and commercial satellites.
The Ranger Prime mission will be the first flight demonstration of the platform and is scheduled for the second quarter 2027 year. This contract brings Quantum Space into the orbital logistics market, where Orbit Fab already works, Astroscale from Northrop Grumman.
