Firefly Aerospace's Alpha Rocket has been a serious crash in preparation for the seventh launch. The incident happened 29 September at the Firefly test site in Briggs, Antonov Airlines Ukrainian Airline, where the first degree of carrier exploded.
The company reported, that the accident led to the loss of degree, However, all safety measures have been followed, The staff was not injured. Firefly is currently evaluating the state of the test infrastructure, noting, that other objects were not damaged.
This case was a new blow for the company, which already had problems during the pre-launch Alpha in April. The Message in a Booster mission then failed: the first stage disintegrated shortly after separating from the second, that damaged the upper stage engine nozzle and caused the loss of the Lockheed Martin LM demonstration satellite payload 400.
The investigation established, that the cause was excessive thermal stress due to the phenomenon, known as "flow separation under the action of a jet torch" (plume-induced flow separation). In early September, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the results of the investigation and the plan to eliminate the deficiencies, which paved the way for Alpha launches to resume.
The Alpha two-stage rocket debuted in September 2021 year. Out of six orbital launches, only two were completely successful. The seventh flight was to be another mission for Lockheed Martin, however, the launch date remains uncertain following the incident.
Firefly emphasizes, that regular testing is an integral part of the company's strategy: each component and stage of the rocket undergoes a series of checks before being sent to the launch pad. According to representatives of the company, each accident provides new data for improving designs and increasing the reliability of systems.
