SKY Perfect JSAT joined the research and development project to demonstrate quantum key distribution (QKD) via satellite, who heads the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies of Japan (NICT). The project is part of the Space Strategy Fund initiative, which is coordinated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). In December 2024 NICT received funding in the amount of 14,5 billion yen (about 99 million US dollars) for project implementation.
NICT's goal is to create a compact satellite in low Earth orbit (LEO), capable of providing key distribution using quantum cryptography technologies. SKY Perfect JSAT will be responsible for the development and planning of the satellite control system, and evaluating potential launch satellites. The company has expertise in satellite-based QKD research and will work with NICT on commercialization opportunities for this technology.
In the space industry, there is a growing demand for a high level of security in the data transmission sector, which, according to forecasts, will expand significantly in the coming years. SKY Perfect JSAT actively contributes to the development of the satellite network of quantum cryptographic communication through participation in such projects.
