Sophia Space will begin deploying edge computing nodes on Kepler Communications satellites at the end 2026 year in accordance with the strategic agreement, announced 13 April 2026 year. As part of the partnership, Sophia Space will demonstrate its Orbital Data Center software (OTSOD), using Kepler's optical data relay network “to create a distributed, sustainable computing infrastructure in space".
For reference: Sophia Space is an American space technology startup, which is developing the world's first scalable orbiting data center infrastructure.
Kepler Communications is a Canadian private satellite company (based in Toronto), which is building the world's first highly efficient optical communication network in low Earth orbit.
The joint work of Sophia Space and Kepler will allow “to confirm not only the integration of software and hardware in orbit, but also distributed node management at scale, which will enable dynamic management of large volumes of workloads between multiple spacecraft. The collaboration is also designed to demonstrate enterprise-grade on-orbit computing to multiple users. Among the potential applications is high-precision global weather forecasting, intelligence, observation and reconnaissance, as well as awareness of the situation in outer space.
