SpaceX has officially introduced Stargaze – innovative space environment awareness system (SSA) and traffic management in low Earth orbit (LEO).
Main characteristics of the Stargaze system:
Using the existing network: The system is based on data from star sensor cameras (star trackers), which are equipped with almost 10 000 Starlink satellites.
Scale of observations: Stargaze collects close 30 millions of object observations every day, which allows to calculate their orbits in real time.
Precision: Thanks to the high frequency of data updates, the system can track individual objects up to 1000 times a day, what experts call “breakthrough” for the industry.
Collision warning: Based on the collected data, SpaceX forms a message about the approach (CDMs), which help satellite operators avoid emergency situations.
Availability and Terms:
Free access: SpaceX plans to open the system to all satellite operators in the spring 2026 year on a free basis.
Beta testing: As of February 2026 2018, more than ten companies are already participating in testing the platform.
The goal of the initiative: To ensure stability and safety in conditions of increasingly cluttered orbit and become an alternative to ground-based radar systems, which have a limited data update frequency.
The move is seen as an attempt to set a new standard “cosmic ethics”, where operators openly share data for shared security in space.
