Satellite data provider Spire Global has partnered with one of Germany's largest defense contractors, Diehl Defense, to develop space-based missile warning and hypersonic threat detection capabilities.
10 June 2026 the company announced the signing of a memorandum on cooperation in the field of satellite intelligence. The purpose of the partnership is to study the possibilities of creating early warning systems for ballistic and hypersonic threats. This agreement does not involve financial obligations or the award of contracts, however, it opens the way for companies to future projects in the European missile defense and space security market, which is growing rapidly.
Spire, which controls a constellation of small satellites in low Earth orbit, collects and analyzes radio frequency signals, weather data, aircraft and marine vessel tracking information, as well as other forms of geospatial intelligence. The new partnership comes as Europe accelerates efforts to develop sovereign missile warning capabilities following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and amid growing concerns about ballistic and hypersonic missile threats. The United States operates extensive satellite missile warning networks as part of programs, managed by the US Space Command.
