Telesat expands Canadian ground station network for Lightspeed

10 March 2026 Canadian satellite operator Telesat reported, that has acquired additional land across Canada for the installation of ground stations, which will route data between satellites and core fiber optic networks
and Internet traffic exchange points.

The company is waiting, that at the time of the start of global services will work 24 ground stations. Customers will also be able to choose to use private ground stations on the Telesat Lightspeed network, which will provide additional opportunities for sovereign control over data. Already ordered today 127 gateway antennas from the South Korean company Intellian to equip these ground stations, and also concluded an agreement with the Israeli SatixFy for signal processing systems for them.

The placement of Telesat ground stations around the world is designed as follows, to deliver data as close as possible to its final destination, which further reduces latency. in addition, a number of countries require, to satellite traffic, which serves their territory, landed within their borders for security reasons, privacy or sovereignty. Such countries include India, the most populous country in the world, which last year introduced stricter data security and compliance rules for satellite communications to protect national security interests.

The proposed network of ground stations would allow each Lightspeed satellite to see multiple stations simultaneously, which increases the stability of the network. The distribution of stations by region also helps maintain service during weather disruptions.
