European space service provider Telespazio and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) signed an agreement to expand the Galileo control center at the Fucino Space Center in the Abruzzo region (Italy).
According to the agreement, EUSPA will finance the expansion of the facility on behalf of the European Commission. The modernization of the ground infrastructure will ensure the management of the orbital operations of the second generation Galileo satellite group.
The project involves the construction of two new buildings on the territory of the existing complex 6000 kv. city, which was created in 2010 year and expanded in 2021. The new facilities will house mission control rooms and secure data centers, corresponding to the highest levels of EU security classification. Telespazio will provide a full cycle of work — from construction to system integration and commissioning.
The management of Telespazio emphasized the importance of investments in terrestrial infrastructure to ensure European sovereignty in satellite navigation. The expansion of the center will increase the reliability and security of the system, used by hundreds of millions of Europeans.
Once operational, the upgraded center in Fuchino will take over the management of the second-generation Galileo satellites. The facility will provide grouping time synchronization and formation corrections based on Leonardo space hydrogen atomic clocks.
