Kongsberg NanoAvionics Company (NanoAvionics) joined the consortium, which under Thales Alenia Space will study the SIRIUS mission (Space Based Infra-Red Imager for Urban Sustainability) European Space Agency (THIS) as part of the FutureEO program.
NanoAvionics will provide its experience in the creation of small satellites, including the field-proven MP42H microsatellite platform and flight control segment design, to meet the technical requirements of the mission.
SIRIUS is a new concept for the Earth observation mission, aimed at frequent and high-precision night monitoring of urban areas in Europe using thermal infrared imaging (TIR). This will allow measuring the temperature of buildings, infrastructure and soil surface from space. Within the framework of the study, the architecture of the space and ground segments will be determined to solve such tasks, as combating the effect of urban heat islands, supporting urban planning and developing effective climate policies.
Consortium, led by Thales Alenia Space, brings together European Earth observation experts and scientists.
The SIRIUS probe is part of ESA's Scout mission series, which involve flexible, a fast and relatively inexpensive approach to testing new concepts in the field of Earth observation, with an emphasis on scientific research.
