President Donald Trump has nominated Lt. Gen. Douglas Schiess for promotion and selected him to be the next chief of space operations. As of today, the nomination is being considered by the Senate Armed Services Committee, and if confirmed, Schiess will replace General Bradley Chance Saltzman, who headed the Space Force
since September 2022 year.
Douglas Schiess began his career in 1992 year in the Air Force as a missile forces officer, and then moved on to space operations. His assignment included intercontinental ballistic missile units, launches into space, GPS and satellite communications. He held several command positions, key to US military space activities, including the 45th Space Wing at Cape Canaveral and the 21st Space Wing, which deals with the warning of missile strikes and the control of outer space. General Schiess also commanded satellite operations units, such as the 4th Space Operations Squadron. Prior to his current role, Schiess was the first commander of the Space Forces component at the US Space Command ((U.S. Space Forces–Space)).
