29 July 2025 Professor Michelle Dougherty became the first woman, appointed to the post of Royal Astronomer of Great Britain, which is a historic event in the 350-year history of this position. She replaced Lord Martin Rhys, who held this role during 30 years. Position, shallow by King Charles II at 1675 year to improve navigation by determining longitude at sea, today it is honorary and involves advising the monarch on astronomical matters.
