6 May 2025 року Білий дім офіційно передав Сенату кандидатуру Метью Андерсона на посаду заступника адміністратора NASA. The White House did not announce this until the Space Force Association's social media post, where Matthew serves as Chief Development Officer. Anderson served in the Air Force 24 years, having retired with the rank of colonel in 2021 year. He was a pilot and instructor, and prior to his retirement as a senior liaison officer with the US Space Command, NORAD and the US Northern Command of the US Transportation Command.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he joined the defense company CACI International as a vice president, where he held the position of executive director of customer service for the Space and Air Force. He also held several positions in the Space Force Association, non-profit organization, which defends the interests of the Space Forces.
Anderson's nomination surprised some in the space industry. They noted, that although he has a background in national security, earned through work in the Air Force and industry, his interaction with NASA was limited. They expected, that the White House will nominate someone, who had experience working more actively at or with NASA, to complement Jared Isaacman, a NASA administrator candidate with little NASA experience.
Anderson and Isaacman know each other. Anderson, holding a position in the Space Force Association, interviewed Eisekaman on stage at the Spacepower group conference in December, shortly thereafter, as Trump announced his intention to nominate Isaacman for administrator. Isaacman did not discuss the nomination in an interview, and instead discussed America's competitiveness in space and the role of commercial space.
On social media, Anderson advocated Isaacman's nomination.
