Trump's executive order directs NASA to develop a plan for quantum space applications

US President Donald Trump signs executive order "Opening the next frontier of quantum innovation", aimed at accelerating the development of quantum technologies, particularly for space applications.

The document obliges NASA during 120 days to submit a five-year plan for the development of civilian quantum sensors and networks for use in space. Other federal agencies are also tasked with preparing similar plans. The Ministry of Defense must identify at least three priority next-generation quantum sensor projects for implementation by September 2028 year. The decree also launches the QC-ADDS initiative to build a powerful quantum computer for scientific research. in addition, Trump signed a separate executive order to strengthen cryptographic protection of critical infrastructure against threats from quantum computers.

The executive orders come on the heels of Infleqtion's announcement of America's Quantum Space Initiative, an industry coalition with Voyager Technologies, Armada, Monarch Quantum and the University of Colorado at Boulder. According to Infleqtion CEO Matt Kinsella, the company plans to deploy a quantum gravity gradiometer with NASA and JPL by the end of the decade, which will provide a 10-1000 times increase in accuracy compared to existing sensors. The main challenges at the moment are of an engineering nature - the creation of systems, resistant to space conditions.

У контексті глобальної конкуренції зазначається, що Китай активно інвестує в квантові комунікації. Ініціатива покликана об’єднати зусилля промисловості, science and the state for a quick transition from demonstrations to practical application of quantum technologies in space.
