York Space acquired satellite propulsion equipment manufacturer Orbion Space

12 March 2026 In 2018, the satellite manufacturer York Space Systems announced the acquisition of Orbion Space Technology, integrating key satellite propulsion technology and expanding production for national security programs in space. This agreement supports the company's strategy to create an "integrated space ecosystem" and expand domestic production of spacecraft components.

The Orbion company develops electric propulsion systems for small satellites. Her Hall-type Aurora engine uses electricity, produced by the satellite's solar panels to accelerate charged particles and create thrust, which allows spacecraft to maneuver in orbit and hold position. With the acquisition, York will integrate this technology in-house as part of a broader strategy to control more of the satellite supply chain.

York Space Systems has become a significant supplier to US national security programs, in particular, for an expanded constellation of low-orbit satellites, which is managed by the Pentagon's Space Development Agency.

Going forward, Orbion will continue to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of York. York founder and CEO Dirk Wallinger said, that the acquisition "will enable Orbion's advanced technologies to be more closely aligned with the growing requirements for large-scale constellations across the sector. The combination will also provide a clear path to expand Orbion's manufacturing capabilities to support growing demand for commercial and national security satellites.".
